May 10th would prove to be another exciting night of racing at Winchester
Speedway. In the O'Reilly Auto Parts sponsored Super Late Model division, Jerry
Ashley set quick time around the 3/10's mile oval with a 13.67 to earn himself
another pole position for the second week in a row. 16 Super Late Models
registered to do battle an the high banks of Winchester Speedway, but when the
green flag dropped, it was apparent early who the victor would be. Daniel Miller
made it look easy as he shot out to the front and had an early straight away
lead on the second place car of Jerry Ashley. Daniel Miller began quickly
picking off the cars one by one, placing them a lap down, until the caution came
out and tightened up the field on the restart. However, when the green flag
dropped again, Daniel quickly jumped away from the rest of the field and went on
to capture the checkered flag.
Daniel Miller's good fortune continued in the Modified Open
Wheel feature race. Daniel set quick time in qualifying to earn himself a pole
position start, but it was Mark Haddon who would lead almost the entire race
with Daniel Miller in hot pursuit. Daniel kept pressing Mark until the final
lap. Mark slipped coming out of turn 2 on the final lap and it was a race to the
finish. Daniel and Mark would exchange the lead back and forth several times
down the backstretch and into turn 3 before Daniel Miller dove low in turn four
and charged to the finish line, taking the checkered flag in the Modified Open
Wheel feature event.
In the Neal's Body Shop sponsored Mini Stock feature event,
it was the Farless & Farless show. Billy Farless earned his first victory of the
young 2008 season with Lee Farless coming home in second.
The Cumberland Drywall Materials, Inc. sponsored 2
Barrel/Crate Late Model feature event would also produce another first time
winner. Matthew Summers held off a hard-charging Steve Garner in the final laps
to stake claim on his first victory at Winchester Speedway in the Shannon Davis
owned machine. Watch for Matthew to produce more wins as this is his first year
racing in the 2 Barrel/Crate Late Model division.
The Cumberland Bail Bonding sponsored Pure Stock division
looked as though it would have the same outcome as the three previous weeks.
Dewayne Hicks has been dominant this year in the D66 Chevrolet, winning three in
a row. It looked as though the result would be the same this week as Dewayne
charged to the front early. But it would be a persistent Scott Blackwell who
raced hard the entire race in the second position that would come out on top
this week.
In the 750cc Mini-Modifieds, Michael Brown raced Freddie
Prosser, Jr. hard the entire race swapping the lead back and forth. But on the
final lap coming out of turn 4, Freddie would bobble in a slick spot on the
track from where a car laid down liquid and Michael took advantage of the slip
and came home the victor in the #1 machine.
The Trophy Shop sponsored Modified Street feature was
underway when the rain began to fall and resulted in the night ending early.
Only six laps were completed with Jeff Frame leading, so the remaining nine laps
of this feature will be made up on May 17th. They will line up from the order
they were running when the race was called.
The Hanger Hardwood Sponsored Outlaw Pony feature event was
rained out and will be made up on May 17th.
